About Pepe Reilly
Pepe Reilly, who grew up in Glendale CA, is a super welterweight boxer, and now a trainer. He started boxing at the age of 8 in the tough gyms of Los Angeles. Although Pepe came from a middle class environment, he took to the rough terrain of all the toughest neighborhood gyms. Growing up with fellow young prospect like Oscar de la Hoya and Shane Mosley made Pepe a worthy competitor and fellow Olympic teammate in Barcelona, Spain for the 1992 Olympic Games. He represented the U.S. as a welterweight, winning his first fight impressively against local Spanish favorite Victor Baute, with a third round stoppage. The media buzz after the match won him praise and the recognition for the performance of the opening day of the Olympic boxing competition. Word was that if he stayed on course, he would end up in the medal round without any problems. The buzz in L.A. was that they were ready to receive a new superstar in the sport once the competition was over. But Pepe ran into problems. In his next match, under the strict rule of an unfriendly referee and a wild and unorthodox Lithuanian boxer, Pepe Reilly was out pointed. Disappointed but not discouraged, he went home to start a professional career. Under the guidance of Team de la Hoya and Bob Arum’s Top Rank Promotions, Pepe started his pro career a success, winning his first four fights by knockout. His professional career continued mostly a success. Along the way Pepe would learn life lessons about victory and defeat, and the never ending message…never give up. It took a valiant 10 round victory that would finally and temporarily halt Pepe Reilly’s career because of two broken hands suffered during the fight on a tough night in Detroit. Knocking his opponent down five times in the first four rounds, but unable to finish him, was the defining factor of Pepe Reilly’s broken handed victory, an injury that would prove difficult to overcome. Fighting the under card of a Tommy Hearns main event proved to be a temporary stoppage in a career put on hold. Pepe Reilly is a pro boxer with a 16-4, 12 KO’s record.
